Choice between two different EGT sensor designs icon

Do Petrol Vehicles Need EGT?

While EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) sensors are typically considered essential for Diesel engines, there’s a specific group of high-performance petrol owners where EGT monitoring can be just as important particularly those running naturally aspirated (NA) builds at the edge of their tuning limits.

Most turbocharged or supercharged petrol vehicles can get away with monitoring AFR only, which is why “No EGT Sensor” is the default option when configuring this Petrol 14in1 Starter Kit. But if you’re running a lean, high-revving NA build especially on E85 or with motors like the Honda K20/K24 then adding an EGT sensor becomes a smart move.

When Does EGT Matter on Petrol Engines?

  • High-performance NA builds that run very lean for power and efficiency gains

  • Applications where EGT temps regularly hit 900–950°C under full load

  • Serious track and street cars aiming for data-driven tuning

  • Engines where AFR and EGT readings together offer deeper insight into combustion health and tuning safety

In these scenarios, relying on AFR alone might not be enough, EGT gives you an extra layer of protection and performance feedback, especially when pushing boundaries on timing, compression, and fuel blends.

We offer three EGT sensor configurations for petrol and E85 builds:

  • No EGT Sensor – Default for most boosted setups where AFR is the focus

  • JRP v2 Sensor – Proven performer, ideal for general NA use

  • JRP v3 Sensor – Upgraded probe with improved shielding and faster response, perfect for serious NA applications

  • JRP v3 90° Sensor – Same as above, but with a right-angle design for tight installs

If you're unsure whether an EGT sensor is right for your build, feel free to reach out to our team, we’re happy to point you in the right direction.

JRP Multi Gauge Base Pack Features In Detail Icon

OLED Screen

Our 14in1 Multi Gauge systems use a high-quality OLED screen rather than a traditional LCD, and the difference is noticeable from the moment you power it on.

OLED screens are brighter, clearer, and offer superior off-angle viewing, giving you far more flexibility in mounting the display. No matter where you place it dash-mounted, pillar-mounted, or tucked away you’ll be able to read your data easily and clearly.

One of the most important features of any gauge is readability in all conditions, and this is where OLED technology really shines (pun intended). Unlike LCDs, which can suffer from poor viewing angles and weaker backlighting, our OLED screens maintain strong visibility even when viewed from the side.

To ensure the screen is comfortable to read day or night, the 14in1 gauge also features:

  • 3-Stage Automatic Brightness Adjustment – A built-in light sensor automatically dims or brightens the display based on ambient lighting.

  • 5-Stage Manual Brightness Control – If you prefer, you can manually fine-tune the screen’s brightness to your liking.

Clear, vibrant, and built for real-world driving our OLED screens make sure your vital information is always easy to see.

Customisable Displays

The JRP 14in1 OLED gauge features four selectable screen layouts, each offering a different arrangement of sensor data and readouts. It’s possible to display up to 6 different readouts on the gauge at once, or you can enlarge two readouts having a total of 4 on the screen at once with two being larger in size.
Of the four selectable screens, two are fully customizable, allowing you to choose:

  • Which sensors or readouts are displayed

  • Where each readout is placed

  • The size and style of each display element

You can view the screen cell breakdown charts further down this page to explore the different size and style options, along with details on which sensors are supported in each configuration.

Another great feature of the 14in1 gauge is the ability to independently configure your units of measurement:

  • Speed: KPH or MPH

  • Pressure: PSI or KPA

  • Temperature: Celsius or Fahrenheit

This means you can set up the system exactly how you want it such as KPH for speed, PSI for pressure, and Celsius for temps without compromise.
(And for our fellow Aussies yes, you can absolutely keep using PSI without having to learn KPA!)

High Quality Sensors

The sensors included with our multi-gauge systems deliver high-end performance without the high-end price tag. We’ve tested them side-by-side with big-name brand gauges using reference-grade tools, and every sensor falls well within a 1% accuracy range.

We know how critical sensor accuracy and durability are they’re the heart of any quality gauge system. But in real-world use, chasing anything beyond 1% accuracy often means paying significantly more for a difference you’ll never notice. For 99% of users, that extra 0.1% just isn’t worth the cost.

With JRP, you’re getting reliable, accurate sensors built for performance without the inflated price.

Air Intake Temp Readout IATAir Intake Temperature Readout

With the addition of an IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor to the v2 Control Unit and Sensor Package, JRP 14in1 gauges can now monitor and display air intake temperatures—an essential upgrade for serious engine monitoring.

This is especially important for turbocharged and supercharged vehicles, where monitoring intake temps after the intercooler can be critical. Almost all aftermarket ECUs rely on IAT readings as a major input when tuning; if intake temps rise too high, most ECUs will automatically pull timing to help prevent detonation and protect the engine.

Even if your vehicle doesn’t have an aftermarket ECU, having real-time intake temp data is incredibly valuable. You can:

  • See if your intercooler is keeping up under load.

  • Know when it's time to back off during heavy track use.

  • Monitor temps during long 4x4 runs where heat soak becomes a risk.

And even if you do have an aftermarket ECU pulling IAT internally, unless you have a full standalone dash, you’re often blind to what the temps are doing in real time. With the 14in1’s integrated IAT display, you now have visual, at-a-glance access to your intake temps while driving.

Just like every monitored parameter on our system, you can also set up customizable warnings. If your intake temps climb too high, the gauge will alert you—helping you react before things get dangerous.

The addition of IAT monitoring is a major step forward toward making the JRP 14in1 one of the most complete, flexible engine monitoring solutions available.

Lambda Gauge Readout SupportedLambda Or AFR Selectable Readout

In the latest revision of our multi-gauge systems, you now have the option to select between AFR and Lambda readouts for the wideband input.

Previously, the gauge displayed a fixed AFR range of 10.0–20.0, ideal for petrol applications. While this could still be used for alternative fuels like E85 and ethanol, it wasn't the preferred scale many tuners and customers are accustomed to when working with non-pump fuels.

Now, with just a setting change, you can switch the display to show Lambda readings (0.68–1.36) — which is the wideband controller’s native output before any conversion to AFR.

This makes the gauge more flexible for those running:

  • E85

  • Methanol

  • Ethanol blends

  • Or for tuners who simply prefer using Lambda even with standard pump petrol.

Our Spartan 3 Lite v2 wideband kits support this full Lambda range, providing accurate readings for a wide variety of fuels

Petrol Air Fuel Ratio Lean Warning

One of the latest features added to the JRP 14in1 system is the Wideband Lean-Out Warning and for anyone running a wideband, this is a game-changer.

When connected to a compatible wideband controller (like the Spartan 3 Lite v2 we sell, or any wideband with a 0–5V 10–20 AFR output), the system can now monitor your Air-Fuel Ratios (AFRs) in real time and trigger a warning if the engine runs leaner than your configured safe limit.

This feature is vital whether you're running a boosted or naturally aspirated setup.
Standalone wideband displays with similar warning features often cost over $500 AUD, but with the JRP system, you get powerful AFR monitoring and protection built right into your main gauge screen.

Why a Lean-Out Warning Matters

Let’s face it while most of us glance at our gauges during spirited driving, the reality is that a sudden lean condition (like a drop from 11.5 AFR to 14.5 AFR under boost) can cause catastrophic detonation within seconds. Waiting for human detection simply isn’t fast enough.

A wideband lean-out warning acts as an immediate safety net, alerting you the moment your AFRs move into dangerous territory giving you precious time to react and potentially saving your engine from major damage.

We’ve also created a detailed setup video showing exactly how to configure this warning system properly.

On-Screen Logging & Peak Value Recording

The JRP 14in1 Multi Gauge includes a surprisingly powerful on-board logging and peak value tracking system, giving you real-time diagnostic capability without needing an aftermarket ECU or laptop.

On-Board Logging – Up to 5 Minutes of Real-Time Playback

You can record up to 5 minutes of live driving data, capturing real-time sensor values across every connected input. Once recorded, you can replay the session directly on the gauge, making it an excellent tool for tuning, diagnostics, and setup.

This feature is especially useful when configuring advanced warning functions. For example:

  • To properly set up the oil pressure warning, you’ll need to know your typical oil pressure at specific RPMs.

  • Logging allows you to replay your drive, study the values, and configure custom warning thresholds for oil pressure, fuel pressure, and differential pressure—all of which vary from engine to engine.

It’s also proven useful in carburetted vehicles. With a wideband connected, plus RPM and boost sensors, owners can check AFR readings at specific RPM and manifold pressure to fine-tune fuel mixtures—an especially popular use for older vehicles.

Even drag racers have used this feature to log full runs and review the data after a pass.

Peak Mode – Live Max Value Tracking

Peak Mode is another smart feature that tracks the highest value recorded for each selected sensor.

  • View up to five sensor peaks at once.

  • Supported for all key readings: Boost, Oil Temp, Water Temp, Oil Pressure, Fuel Pressure, EGT, RPM, Volts, Speed, and more.

  • Unlike the 5-minute limit in logging, Peak Mode runs continuously, making it perfect for ongoing monitoring during spirited driving, dyno tuning, or off-road climbs.

This is also a great way to determine practical warning values. Just go for a solid drive, see what your actual peak temps and pressures are, and then set your alarms accordingly.

And just like other modes, the gauge’s active warning system still runs in the background. If any of your live values exceed the safe thresholds you’ve configured, the system will still alert you—keeping your engine protected at all times.

Sensors Have 1/8 PT Threads

At JRP, we’re always engineering smarter ways to make sensor installation easier and more adaptable. That’s why we’ve adopted a unique 1/8 PT (JIS Tapered Pipe) thread across most of our sensors offering a more versatile fit across a wide range of setups.

Understanding Thread Standards

Most automotive sensors typically use one of two thread types:

  • NPT (National Pipe Thread): Common in North America and aftermarket components, with 27 threads per inch on a 1/8 fitting.

  • BSP (British Standard Pipe): Used globally, including most OEM engine components, with 28 threads per inch on a 1/8 fitting.

These thread types are not interchangeable - forcing them together can damage the threads and lead to sealing issues or leaks.

The Advantage of PT Threads

JRP sensors use PT threads, which measure approximately  27½ threads per inch. While they are technically different from both NPT and BSP, this “in-between” thread form allows for a reliable mechanical fit into both port types - when installed correctly using PTFE (Plumbers) tape.

PTFE tape lubricates the threads allowing the threads to tighten more effectively and form a reliable seal. It also helps prevent leaks and reduces the risk of the threads seizing or galling, making removal easier in the future.

Thanks to JRP’s tighter-than-standard manufacturing tolerances, this level of compatibility is made possible without compromising thread integrity or requiring additional adapters.

Practical Benefits

  • Direct Fit: Installs confidently into both NPT and BSP ports—no guesswork or extra adapters needed.

  • Time Saving: Simplified installations mean you can get your vehicle back on the road faster.

  • Cost-effective: Reduces the number of adapters and fittings needed, saving both time and money.

Note: While our Water Temp, Oil Temp, Trans Temp, and Pressure sensors now feature PT threads for maximum compatibility, please be aware that our EGT sensors remain 1/8 NPT, and IAT sensors are 3/8 NPT. Any future changes to these specifications will be promptly updated.

By integrating PT threads into our sensor designs, JRP continues to prioritize your convenience, ensuring our products are not only high-quality but also adaptable to your specific needs.
